LIMA (AP)–A computer software trade group says that piracy in Peru cost software companies $75 million in 2007.
An annual study commissioned by the Business Software Alliance shows that 71% of software installed or packaged in Peru in 2007 was pirated. The alliance includes software giants Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and Adobe (ADBE).
Gustavo Leon y Leon is the group’s Peru representative. He says 75% of the country’s small and medium-size businesses currently use pirated software.
Leon said Wednesday that he expects piracy levels to hover around 71% this year. Peru is expected to implement new intellectual-property-rights laws in 2009.
